der aus nürnberg stammende robin van velzen ist wohl der erste wirkliche singer/songwriter in deutschland. liedermacher wie reinhard mey sind außer Konkurenz, am ehesten könnte man peterlicht anführen wenn es um einzelne geht, die in den vordergrund treten.
da nürnberg auch der ort von »the robocop kraus« und »hidalgo« ist, verwundert es nicht, dass hans-christian fuss (schlagzeuger bei »hidalgo« und »the robocop kraus«) auf dem selbstbetitelten album von the mother the son and the holy ghost ständig hinter den trommeln sitzt. bei einigen stücken holte sich leadsänger und gitarrist van velzen auch die unterstützung von tobias helminger (ehemals »the robocop kraus«) am bass, betty mugler (»hidalgo«) am gesang und chris koch (»unmono«) an der gitarre ins studio.
mit van velzens stimme immer im zentrum des arrangements, und dem mit raummikros aufgenommenen schlagzeug widmen sich tmtsathg voll und ganz der puren form des rock. durch die konzentration auf geradliniges und zeitloses songwriting und das weglassen von überflüssigen spielereien schufen die nürnberger natürliche klangwelten wie sie auch schon neil young formte. in dem stück »onion« besingt van velzen dieses häuten der zwiebel mit: „strip away the layers of your soul, and what remains is the essence, is all we need to know“. neben folkigen, balladeskeren stücken, welche allein von van velzen mit gitarre vorgetragen werden, sind durchaus auch tanzbare stücke wie »could you be« auf dem album vertreten.
the mother the son and the holy ghost schaffen hier durch reinheit raum für den mehrwert gut geschriebener songs.
